ComCom caught with Pinocchio nose

Following pressure from EUFA, Hon Simon Power, the Minister of Commerce, has discovered Commerce Commission officials have been providing him with false information.

EUFA has been engaged in fruitful dialogue with the Minister but frustrated for some time about the deceptive and obstructive information they say his officials are providing him.

This has culminated in the Minister formally apologising to EUFA coordinator Suzanne Edmonds. In his letter, Mr Power said…

“I have broached this issue with my officials, and can confirm that the advice I received was incorrect… I have informed my officials that such an error is unacceptable… I apologise for the mistake in my previous letter. As Minister of Commerce I take the issues you have raised with me very seriously, and I am deeply unhappy and disappointed that incorrect information was relayed to me.”

Suzanne Edmonds says she has further evidence that ComCom officials have been, and continue to be, less than truthful with the Minister and “blatantly obstructive to the public”. She goes on to say…

“They are hell bent on … putting [the Minister's] reputation on the line to cover their own wrongdoings. They are preventing investors the opportunity to present their evidence. This is demonstrated by all the claims EUFA have made for almost 3 years. Mr Power would be wise to realise that the issues need dealing to urgently, laws need enforcing, and the culprits need to be held accountable.”

Those who know Suzanne Edmonds know she is like a pitbull terrier and won’t let go until justice is seen to have been done. Suzanne likes to quote Samuel Adams (1722 – 1803), statesman, political philosopher and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States…

“It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people’s minds.”

ComCom officials should be scared. Very scared.

The best way for them to avoid the spotlight being shone on their activities is to take full and thorough action on the important issues raised by EUFA.
